This would definately be something I'd buy if I had enough money. Now it also makes me wonder...

Seeing that a 400ex is pretty quick and that a Raptor or DS650 doesn't exactly KILL a 400ex in a drag (probably due to weight), would a 650EX have no problem staying ahead of one of these bigger bikes?

fred, the motor weighs no more than the ds and raptor engines do why do you think that 40 pounds is going to negate 8-12 hp in bone stock form?

The 400ex is a great bike, but it's no contest against the big bores which indeed do leave it in the dust in a drag race or hill climb. However, with the xr650 engine it would be a contender without question.

This topic has been discussed pretty much since the 650 engine was released back in 00 or 01, and this isnt the first time someone swapped this engine into another chassis. There is a member here who has the engine in a warrior.

I don't know why they just don't go out and give us a 1000ex or something. That would kickass. Snowmobiles have high horsepower engines, so why can't ATV manufacturers give us something POWERFUL? Ski-Doo recently released their Mach Z 1000 TRIPLE. It's not a 4-stroke, it's a 2-stroke. Now, imagine somehow getting that engine into a 400ex? Or just put it into a DS because it's another Rotax engine.

Maybe Honda just wants more and more people to want a 650ex so they are holding off for a bit. And once a 650ex is released, Honda will make loads of profit.

First of all the quad on E-bay, lets call it "Skiddles" for the sake of identification, it's not a very pretty bike. Secondly, do you think there is a reason why this guy is selling Skiddles. Probably because it's not all it's cracked up to be. And third, the stock xr650r puts out from 40-45 horsepower, which is only a little more than a stock trx450r (38-41) and quite a bit less than a stock crf450r (47-51). With that said, I would guess that a stock TRX450r and a quad with a xr650r stock motor in it would accelerate about the same considering the extra weight that the 650 quad would have. Not just the extra weight from the motor but bigger, stronger frame, larger battery to turn the motor over etc. Who would want to ride a considerably heavier quad that accelerates the same as an option that is already out now??? I question whether anyone that wants a xr650r based quad has ever ridden a 55 horsepower modded stock bore trx450r or yfz450 quad. If you had already done so, you probably wouldn't care about the xr650r based quad. Good luck to the guy that is trying to sell Skiddles on E-bay for $15,000+ and I feel for the guy that may buy it.

the old raptors did just fine alongside the yfz. you are probably right about the power/weight, but you have to factor in reliability. sure you can get all the same power for 350lbs, but how far do you go until maintenance and plain old durability take a hit? im not saying the 450r/yfz are junk, but a bigger 650 version of the 400ex gives you that much more power and still maintains the 400ex's reputation for bieng easy to maintain and no real issues.

its like saying why do we need a raptor (new raptor for this example) when a yfz does just fine. sure the yfz could be said it does everything the raptor does in a lighter frame, but theres just something cool about a quad you can gas and go, and not have to worry about anything other then simple maintenance.

Hey man thats a Mach Z 1000 Twin 2 stroke , a triple would be cool but they're not relesing one.
