Default Need Help with 2001 Rancher ES

My father in law has a rancher es that is stuck in 1st gear. I opened my shed and tug on it a bit and it rolled out of the shed. If it were truly in gear it shouldn't have rolled at all, correct? I hopped on it, stuck the key in and the dash display says it's in first gear. It does not respond to anything. If I click the down arrow to get into nuetral it does nothing. I tried to roll it back in the shed and could barely move the thing forward but it rolls backwards without a problem. When you push it forward (using hercules type strength to do so) you can hear it winding as if it were in gear. I also tried using the pull start option to no avail. I'm confused and now it's in the shed blocking in my 400ex and I'm not too happy about it. Please help!

Do you have the manual shift lever? You can use that to try to get it into neutral. Mine will roll while in gear. Easy in one direction, difficult in the other direction. It could be the angle sensor, a problem with the shifter pod, a trans problem.

You can try rocking it forward and backward while trying to shift with the buttons.

Has the quad been parked (stored) in gear for any length of time? That might play a role in the problem.

Angle Sensor or the shift motor does it display a code at all? esp blinking on the display? I am not sure if 01's had this but if so count the blinks and that will be your error code.

Make sure the battery has a full charge and is good condition.......only way to get a good test on an old battery is to take it into a bike shop or auto parts and have it load tested.

It doesn't have a manual shift lever, only the down and up arrows for shifting. What is an angle sensor, shifter pod? I've tried rocking it which is what my father in law suggested to no avail. I'm thinking it was left in gear the last ime it was parked in the shed but that was only for one week. No codes are being displayed either. I'm not sure if the battery has a good charge or not but the reason it's not cranking is because it has to be in nuetral to start, otherwise it doesn't respond to anything. Lights all work, low and high beams, winch works etc. I don't think in my opinion that it's a battery problem. If I could only get it in nuetral I bet it would start. Thanks guys. Any other suggestions would be very helpful.

Just because the lights work that doesnt mean the battery is giving the computer the proper power needed to operate right.
You can also try unhooking the battery cables for a few min and then reconnecting it back up....this will reset the computer.
Your manual shift lever is in the rear tail light box snapped in up high.

My 2000 Rancher ES was just doing this exact thing that you are describing. Exact same thing.

I was thinking the worst and was "eliminating" possible problems when I found that the electrical plug that plugs into the Angle Sensor was un-plugged. I plugged it back in and everything works fine. I then secured it with a wire-tie so it won't come off again.

Some freak chance apparently happened, must have been a stick that came up through the belly pan.

The angle sensor is on the bottom-front of the engine.

Good luck, Kev

Thanks so much to everyone! Much to my surprise Kodiak......it was the friggin battery. Very deceiving when your high beams work, winch works etc. charged her up and she's running like a dream again. My father in law doesn't put much trust in the internet but he's singing a different tune now. Thanks again!

Default Need Help with 2001 Rancher ES

I have this EXZACT same problem except my rancher is stuck in 2nd. I tried using a starter to start it but it didnt work. Maybe I could try a Car.. Which is what i did with my Recon...

But if it is the Angle Sensor connecter , Where can i Find the plug , And how much would a new one be to replace it , And can it be done at home?

Thanks !
