2002 Rubicon Shifting Problems
#1
Hello Forum Club,
I have read over several of the post, but as of yet have been unable to find the cure for my exact problem. Any assistance that you can provide would be appreciated.
First of all, I left my Rubicon outside in the rain one evening, thinking surely that an ATV could handle the elements. In the morning I went to start my Rubicon and it would not shift out of first gear. I put it in reverse and it would sputter and acted as though it wanted to run out of fuel. On the display screen the D1, D2 and ESP lights will flash simultaneously. I took it to the dealer, and of course, it was showing D1 the selector that I had it in and it ran perfect. This problem has occured quite often. At times it will run just fine and at other times when I go to start it the display flashes all three selectors simultaneously, and I am unable to change gear selections, except in the reverse mode. If I turn the key on and off several times it seems as if the computer resets itself and it will display the selected gear and the unit will run fine. I have read that there is a possible problem with the speed sensor or the angle sensor, but I have been unable to find the specific reason or solution to this problem. Any assistance with this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Also note that the unit will run fine in the proper selection chosen but it will backfire and go back to 1st gear at times and all lights will again begin to flash simultaneously until I again turn the key on and off again several times and then begin to run properly.
Thank you.

I don't know much about the quad but i would guess that you have a prob with the sensor and if it bafkfires and runs poorly it sounds like you jets need to be cleaned out and it sounds like you got water either in your gas or oil and maybe some in the engine so clean everything out and see if that helps any

My rubicon did the same thing when It first started. We rode it to a deer stand to do some limb trimming. Cut it off, got back on started it up and when we started going it would not shift out of 1st gear. We got it back in and after not being able to find out what it was we cut it off and on a couple times, when we put it into rev. it would spit and sputter. Cut it off and went into the trailer, ate lunch and when we came back out it was fine. Could not make it do it again. Next morning same thing all displays flashed and would not shift. Honda Mechanic told me how to check the rectifier. If you don't have the meter you can take it off and take it to a dealer and have them check it. Apparently when they are going out they work then don't. It is easy to remove. Located under the right back fender. Only held on with two screws and has the wiring from the alt. plugged in. When the rectifier is acting up the correct current is not passing in then back out correctly , but until the battery is run down it will run, just crappy. From what I gather, any time there is a current issue, whether it is alt, stator, rectifier or what ever for a period of time, the computer seem to need reset. Im not saying that is your problem but it is a easy check and a fairly inexspensive part if it is. If you can get a response from Honda Mechanic he's great. Was a great help to me. (OK mechanic, I hope I explained this OK)
