Howdy yall got a question about a noise my Honda is making, its a fast ticking sound. A budy said it sounded like the valves so checked them and they were dead on. I also heard it could be the timing chain I checked my shop manual out and it doesnt go that deep into checking and or replacing the chain?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Had a cousin who had this problem with his first 4x4, a new 89' suzuki 250 LT4WD Quadrunner he started hearing the ticking about a month after the day he got it home. I checked it out and found the problem, he was smoked up at the time with those left handed cigarette's, not saying this is your problem ; but that was his ! lol ...............williebee

I checked the vaves and they are set to specs. I am leaning towards the timing chain and or guides. I just wish my shop manual had the procedure for replacing the chain in it.
I cant remember exactly what I did (it's been almost a year since I did this) but I remember taking the timing chain tensioner off and checking it out, it was good. Then I used something roughly the same diameter of the tensioner stuck it in the hole until the timing chain got snug, then I measured the distance of how far it went in to the hole and compared the mearurement to the max amount of distance the tensioner would extend. I want to say I could stick the "something" in about a 1/4" further than the tensioner could extend. Any how I am reading the shop manual right now and trying to piece together a procedure for replacing the chain myself. Honda dealer wants way to much money in my opinion.

I remember well the left hand cigarette, man I miss those days!

HondaMechanic does what I am saying sound correct? The quad runs perfectly just has that sound that I described earlier. Would a sound like that be a sympton of timing chain and or guide problems? I have a Clymer manual that I belive will get me through, I will just have to jump back and forth to create my own procedure. If you think the information you have will help then please feal free to email me at james.elmore@weyerhaeuser.com

Thanks!
