Default ATV Problems

I have a 1991 Honda Fourtrax 300. My problem is when i hook the positive and negitive to the battery with everything turned off my engine starts. Im wondering if i my starter is out or if i just have a strong ground somewhere. If anyone has any suggestions or has had this same problem let me know what you think i need to do.

hmm thats a first I have ever heard of that I would check all of the wiring and make sure everything is connected correctly...do they have keys in the 1991's or no I would check every wiring thing over it seems like the power is going directly to the starter

Yes the 91 does come with a key switch. Do you think it might be a wire that is grounded or shorted.

Yes the pos goes to the starter relay I believe and then it should hook up directly to the starter...Well when it is turning on is the key in the quad at all or no and are any of the controls on the on position.

there should be 2 small wires hooking up to that starter relay also, unplug both small wires and recheck. if it still cranks right away, you starter relay is faulty.

if it doesnt crank by itself anymore, you have a short to ground or short to power in those small wires, basically those 2 small wires are the control wires. one is probably either ground all the time or hot all the time, and the starter button gives you whichever is missing, either one wire is ground all the time, and the button switches power, or one wire is hot all the time and the starter button suplies ground. when the starter relay sees power AND ground on the small wires it actuates, and connects the big battery positive to the big starter cable, supplying power to the starter, cranking the engine.
