I have a 2004 Rancher AT 400 and when I tried to start it after 7 month's, no gas flowing through the carb. I went to the Honda dealer and part dealer said the float valve was tarnished and I need to clean the carb (float valve was very tarnished). I cleaned all the parts, put it back together and it started up.

It ran very fast at idle and it is popping. I tried to adjust the manual idle and it does not seem to do anything. I did try to an in-line fuel filter and it only made things worse. I removed a needle valve (from the bottom of the carb), cleaned the stem, sprayed carb cleaner through the hole and screwed it back in 7 1/2 turns (the same amount of turns it took to remove it.

Can any of you carb guys give me an idea what to try or to adjust? The carb is now pretty clean and I think its just a carb adjustment. Thanks Jim

 

take it back apart and remove the pilot jet and clean it out real good and remove the air screw and clean all that out real good. sounds like it is to lean at idle speed and is racing.

and some times before i do anything. i will run it with the air pipe removed from the carburetor and open the throtel and while the engine is reved out i will put my hand over the carberetor i will do this a few times and sometimes it sucks out whatever the heck is blocking it. it dont always work though. that does seem to work good when there is water in it. i am not saying you have water in it . it is just a side note about what i have found and do.

it sounds to me like it is eather way out of adjustment or it is cloged still and leaning out.
