I know I've seen this topic before in the past but never found a clear answer. Could someone give me a description as to how one modifies a Honda so you don't need to pust the red button down to get to reverse? If it makes any difference, I have a rancher es. Thanks for your help.

Why should it matter if you have to push in the red reverse button for? On my Uncles 1992 Honda fourtrax 300 4x4 its real easy, all you have to do is downshift into nuetral and then press the button with your index finger and then pull the brake in and downshift once. I only take about a second but with the ES I have noticed that the Reverse button is back behind the box that have the shifter buttons on. So it would probably be harder to get your finger past or over the shifter box to push the button down. But I am sorry that I could not help you with your problem.

I noticed on my recon the little red button like froze pushed down so al i had to do was pulll the brake and push on the shifter .....on your rancher you might wanna put like duct tape around the button and have it down so all you have to do is pull on the brake handle and push down on the shifter then

I just pushed the red button down pulled in the handle and put a tiny piece of a clothes pin in there to hold it open. I did this on the second trip out on the quad. Now you can just click down to neutral and right in reverse without the use of the button. Makes it a lot easier for turning around especially in unstable ground. It has been in there since new and now has 2800klms. on it. Try it you will like it. If not just push the button, pull in on the handle and the wedge will fall out.

What I did was trace the reverse cable to the end (underneath the quad). There is a small lever that is accuated by the cable. You can use a zip tie and tie this lever in the open position. Whenever you want to shift into revers just downshift from neutral, no button to mess with and no ugly duct tape or clothes pins! However I must add that I removed the zip tie after a short time because I was unsure if it might cause any problems, better safe than sorry you know. But it did work like a charm.
