My 300 ex was a great bike....But to be realistic (no sarcasm intended), it is not the sportiest racer in the world. I woke mine up with a white bros pipe and a mild cam...Made a world of difference....it still kept its reliability and started with one push of the button summer or winter.(your looking at around $300 or so for those mods)
Depending on what you want to use the quad for...you might want to play around with dropping a tooth on the counter sprocket...IT will give you a bit quicker acceleration...but you will loose top end....there seems to always be a trade off when it comees to mods. You need to figure out where you will be riding and what you are expecting out of the bike.
Something as simple as opening up the air box and adjusting the jetting can get you minor gains for less money.

All of the things that he said will work. Without going into major engine work just change the complete exhaust system( I did the FMF Mega Max II) and go up one tooth on the counter shaft to a 14 tooth not go down. the 300 has to much low end to begin with. Make sure that you rejet after the exhaust is put on for it to run the best.
