They must be bulletproof, no top-end for a few years!!! Are ye guys racing them? I wouldn't risk a piston in a dirtbike for over 60/80 hrs in a 4-stroke! I used to rebuild my 125s every 30 hrs and that was pushing it. A mate of mine who is a seriously hard on a bike used to do a top-end evry 12hrs on his 125.

BTW the only reason 4-strokes are so pop is because of the torque they make and how easy they are to ride (in Dirt bikes anyway) not that the take less rebuilding.

the trx250r is my favorite bike of all time. my cousin has an 86 and its a blast to ride and they arent easy to hurt.

If he ever sells it, im buying it right away. These bikes are almost an antique and they are still preforming just as well as they new ones.

crazy1291, look for one of these bikes in the autotrader or something, find one close by then go ride it and see how you like it. The powerband on these bikes is insane, I love the 2-stroke rev

i think a 1988 is the best year they made them but i would buy any year if i found a good cheap one.

Every 30 hours? Every 12 hours? Are you guys racing pro and need every ounce of performance?
Thats insane...

I had an 85' CR125 for 5 years when I was 16(ish) and rode the **** out of it. For a while, I rode it miles and miles every day to my buds house accross a desert, then we would ride together, then I'd ride home as it was getting dark. I put hundreds or thousands of hours on this old 125... and had to rebuild it one time due too a crack in the intake boot. (lean condition)

Every 12/30 hours? Thats... well, I just dont get it.

Well my mate is a youth but is putting in same lap times as A's. You wouldn't believe how hard he is on a bike and he would need evrey hp he can get, ya could hear a crackle from the engine he would have it pinned so much. I'm a C, But every chance I had I had that thing flat out. The piston would be shot at 30hrs. The newer 125's are harder on pistons I find, doesn't take too long to notice a decrease in comp. My dads used to have a 98 Rm125 that thing never died.

You thought that guy was crazy at 12hrs, there is another kid in the 85's with a cr85 with about 15000 euro in it, he does a top-end every 2 hrs!

But I guess the trx wouldn't be getting as much hell or be revving as hard as those bikes. Plus its a 250, the smaller the capacity, in Dirtbikes, generally speaking the more fequent the rebuilds because riders are harder on them and they are not as able for the abuse.

dvxdude, autotrader is the only place i look at for used things- except for stratford cycle, they have a brand new, non-current lt-r450 for 7999- that 2000 off msrp!! i wish i could afford that

im just frustrated that i passed on an '86 lt250r- for only 1700

I want to get the '86 trx250r for 3650, but it seems pretty expensive compared to the one lt250r i saw- but are trx250r's a lot more reliable than lt250r's? i hardly hear of any problems with trx250r's everyone says the trx250r handles better than the lt250r(i think they are getting more expensive now)

i dont care what mods they have as long as it doesnt need better than "gold" gasoline at the pumps and that it has nerfbars

edit: 2 questions, do race ported machines need race gas? and.... how loud is a 1986 trx250r with an FMF pipe and silencer? same as a chainsaw or much worse- I wouldnt be able to go to my friends houses if they have chickens cuz they say a 2stroke or hi-performance thumper would scare the crap out of them resulting in many dead ones. Could i get a quiet core insert?

And one more thing, will i feel COMPLETELY comfortable on a trx250r? it has an extremely low seat, and looks very small- 44" wide and 29.5": tall, thats the same height as a suzuki dr-z125L fourstroke trailbike!

im 14 and 6'3" there's a good chance i'll hit 6'6" or something like that by the end of this year, so i just might need something with a bigger frame.....?

If this will make you feel any better about two strokes, I have a 1972 Suzuki dirt bike with a 125 2stroke. It has thousands upon thousands of hours on it, and has never been rebuilt. Now keep in mind that it doesn't have as much power as it did when new, but it is still strong. This bike has always been ridden by teenagers and young men, so it's not like gramma was out there putting around on it. It was ridden hard.

would a trx250r feel cramped for someone who is 6'3"-6'6"???

I might go with a 2002 400ex i saw, its real nice, and has elkas and a full exhaust system

My 250r has been bulletproof for years. All you need to do is run it at about 40:1 with honda hp2 oil. I dont care what anybody says its the best oil on the market. I pull mine apart every year, Im **** about my 250, and all you need to do is wipe off the exaughst ports with one swipe to uncover that beautiful polished aluminum. As for piston replacement, I change mine every other year, again I am **** about this quad, never has it actually needed changed. When you have your piston changed always get your piston first and take it with you to the person that is doing the bore, that way they can measure the piston and match it for tolerences. Alot of times those pistons arent exactly .20, .30 over and you wont belive the difference in reliability over a couple ten-thousandths of an inch will do. Also have your pistons grammed as close as possible to the origanal factory piston. A heavier piston will not rev the same and can cause motor destroying vibrations in a 250

I know im wicked late on this post but my 2-fitty is fast as lightening and i can smoke just about anything out there on the track and in the sand..with the exception of extremely modified banshees and 450's. I had an ESR 330 with a +4mm stroker crank and it put out 55HP to the rear wheel. It had so much power but it ran hot for some reason... anyway i shattered 3rd gear riding it once i popped the clutch at full bore on accident landing a jump and it went clunk.. rebuilt it, burned up the piston in san felipe running flat out on the highway... lol... it still ran jsut lost alot of compression... i had teh jug swapped to an ESR 350 and the heat problems vanished... nto sure maybe i had a bad 330 jug. Anyway the 350 was nice..ran around 170 degrees beatin on it... had loads of power.. but during a race i blew out the tranny again... same thing i was full bore lading a jump and the 20 year old gears couldnt take it... so it threw a few parts out the bottom end....

The more you mod a 2-fitty the more unreliable it CAN make it... that really depends on what your putting on it though. If you have more power you better beef up your other parts.

If anyone has a bottom end or yukon hardened gears let me know
