420 ES problems already.

I should have listened to reconranger, but I really wanted the gauge cluster and speedo.
My rancher has 265 miles on it currently.
Put about 10 miles on it today ,and the ES is not functioning properly, but it seems different than other ES problems.
Mine will not up shift to lower gears when either of the brakes are being applied.
Other than that it functions fine.
ITs actually working fine right now ,but for most of the ride it was not.
I didnt know the brakes were tied into the shift system.
Any ideas before I haul it to the dealer?
I will say that my rancher seemed faster than its ever been today.
Maybe its really starting to break in, but it just seemed to have more power than usual.
Any replies would be great.
Thanks!

I think you have to apply the brake to get it into reverse, right??? So that mechanism could be experiencing some problem like a short, and fooling the system???? It's on warranty, so get it back to the dealer.

ES system....BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
that's why i bought my ES is for the guage cluster/speedo thing too... too bad honda didnt offer it in the foot shifter version as well.
that's wierd though, it wont downshift when the brakes are applied????? ok, does it upshift when the brakes are applied?? it might seem unnatural to be upshifting with the brakes applied, but it will narrow some things down. there have been several posts about some ES problems with the brakes applied.

I just had the exact same problem. I took it to Honda and it took them a few days to figure it out but the found water in my connector behind the radiator that goes to the shifter. I think it is the second one from the left. All they did was get the water out and put some kind of greese in it. If it is under warranty I would let them handle it. They didnt believe it till they saw the problem. Hope this helps.

It is not recommended to put any type of lube or Dielectric grease in waterproof connectors. That is asking for future problems. The grease can swell and weeken the waterproof seals around the inside of the connector as well as the wire seals on the rear of the connector. Eventually they will dry up and leak.
If a moisture problem is found inside the connector, the connector needs to be dried and the source of the moisture found. Many times water will be directed to it from a wire bundle casing, bad seal inside the connector, damaged connector or improperly connected.
Myself, when finding moisture in a connector and after drying it out, I will reconnect and coat the connector with a spray-on ignition sealer, around the outer connector after it is snapped together, before returning the unit to the customer for its day to day use.
thank you
