2002 recon. Another idle problem
#1
I have a 2002 Honda Recon. It is always garaged, never driven hard, never in water, pretty much babied all its life. All of a sudden this spring, after the winter of not riding, it won't idle. I know I left the gas in all winter (bad thing to do). It starts fine and runs fine. Just won't idle. I can be riding for hours and every time I stop, it dies. I bought a repair book for it which walked me through step by step to take apart and clean the carb. All the little holes were open, every thing appears to be fine. I cleaned all the insides with carb cleaner. Put it all back together, and same thing, won't idle, just dies. Not sure really where to turn next. Ran perfect in the fall, but now no idle. Dealer said they don't have any idea and would charge $75 per hour to "dig around". Probable take about 2 hours to find something. I think that is crap. Anyway, if you have any other ideas, please let me know.

MY 2001 RECON HAS ALWAYS IDLED LIKE THAT ,SOME ONE HAD TOLD ME THAT YOU DONT WANT TO IDLE AIR COOLED ENGINE THAT MUCH ..I MADE SURE AFTER EVERY RUN WHEN I PUT IT BACK IN THE GARAGE I WOULD TURN THE FUEL TO OFF AND LET IT RUN TILL IT DIED OUT ABOUT 3 TO 5 MINNUTES I LIVE IN MINNESOTA AND EVERY THING HAS ETHONOL IN IT AND KIND BE A PAIN. I DO BUMP UP THE IDLE IN THE WINTER AND DROP IT A LITTLE IN THE SUMMER. HOPE THIS HELPS ..OTHER WISE YOU HAVE A VERY GOOD MACHINE IT WILL GO ANY WERE JUST KEEP RUNNIG.

What you have is a clogged slow jet. When you have the bowl off of the carb, there is the main jet(the big one in the center) and the slow jet will be right beside it. It will have to be removed and cleaned. if you dont have anything small enough to go through the jet you can use a single wire from a hand held wire brush, they are just the right size for a size 30 to 35 jet. Do not use any type of drill bit or torch tip cleaners, they will increase the size of the jet and ruin it.
Your dealer knows exactly what wrong with it if you told them the same story you told on here, and they are trying to milk you for some dollars.
