CDI interchangeability???
#2
Unfortunately, no CDI will work with that one except for the same model..and even the year.
The one from the 1988 FourTrax-Foreman 350D will not work and neither will the one from the 86-87 Fourtrax 350.
And no, the 400 or any other Honda will not swap either.
I see alot of these 350 Fourtraxs and 350 Foremans lying in the salvage yards, so it shouldnt be too hard to find one used.
If you go new, have the dealer check availability before plopping down money because Honda began a new contract with a company in China for the CDI boxes earlier this year and there have been some disputes with the two companies causing many CDI boxes to be back ordered unless already in inventory with Honda. Messed up situation with no end in sight, so have them check to see if they can really get it before they just shout out to ya "See ya in two days". Chances are it will take a year to receive that CDI box. I've got dozens ordered back as far as June of this year.
Good luck.

boy, am I glad I read knowalots post here. I guess I have been lucky running a 2000 trx400 box on my 1988 for the last 4 years!
Seriously, I didn't have any background with these things but can read the wiring diagram in the SM I bought. When I compared the way the charging system is wired directly to power the cdi starting in 88...that is kind of the start of the modern era for Honda. I looked at the 2000 wiring and it all looked the same.
Since initial spark timing is from the crank sensor location I guess. the only worry i had was would it ping and rattle from the built in advance. Seems to do fine.
I do have reservations about the 86 and 87 years not sure if they will work. But there are plentyof these offered on ebay.
