Default Reverse on 250x

I recently purchased a Honda 250x that I believe originally had reverse on it. The previous owner converted the quad to race and changed things. Can someone tell me what I would need to do to put the reverse back on? I am looking for information on where to activate the reverse and any wiring that may be required. He did not cut any stock wiring, merely balled it up underneath and taped it together.

Default Reverse on 250x

its been a long time since I owned one but seems like there was a lever on the left side of motor(if your sitting on bike). This lever had a rod connected to it that went to a shaft that comes out of the motor.see if you can find that shaft coming out of motor on the left side.I dont think you will have to have any wiring to make the reverse work.seems like I had to put the bike in neutral, pull in clutch and pull that lever up to go to reverse.

i think there was a R button on the clutch lever too??. you had to press that in, pull the clutch lever in, pull the lever on the side of the engine and put it it what would normally be first. oh and you had to start this process off in neutral...

it is that most pain in the @ss reverse system ever devised! i cant believe honda came up with this system. there is an aftermarket lever you can buy that makes it a little easier and not so much juggling... b/c on their other bikes it seems there was the red button on the clutch and or brake lever (if it ws a semi auto clutch) if you were in neutral just push the little red button, pull back the lever and pop it in reverse by shifting to what would normally be first gear... bottom line is if it did have the R button, then some form of wire is going to be involved.

the easiest one has got to be the warrior - any forward gear, no hunting for neutral, just stop, pull the clutch in, pull up the lever on the right side, push it back and you are in reverse. the only drawback was sometimes you had to rock it to get it back in forward. but the 250X totally out handled the warrior on every level...except a few on top speed.

The little "R" button was hooked to a cable, along with the clutch cable. That cable went down to a little arm on the lower right hand side of the bottom end, of the engine. That arm was bolted onto an 8 or 10mm shaft. That shaft would release a safety in the tranny, so reverse could ba engaged. You will need to get those pieces, along with the main right hand side lever, working(replaced).
