Your drawbacks are heavier steering (increased rider fatigue), increased bump steer, more leverage on the tierods (easier bent), and an increased load on the wheel bearings (wear faster). Basically,..the same setbacks that riders face when adding wheel spacers.
It's up to you to decide if the increase in stabiltiy is worth the drawbacks.

I'm running aftermarket wheels that have a greater offset (ITP Baja). I'm around +3" wider in front (+4" in back), but not having any bump steer problems.

I have done this on a few quads in my day. You definately get a noticeable increase in bump steer and heavier steering. In many cases it isn't a deal breaker, really depends on your type of riding and how hard/long you are at it. You might want to invest in a steering stabilizer which will help calm any neww steering abnormalities.
