set the bike at top dead center. then adjust the valves according to the manual. if your back firing then more than likly your timing is off.

also i re-read your post. if it just died and you have no compression, more than likly you have no rings.

me and my friends dad adjusted it yesterday and still back fireing some one said if your valves are to tight it wont start and the compression drops like a rock and it has poor compression
