Good basic oil read: http://www.thumperfaq.com/oil.htm

Your oil has to do double duty lubing both an engine and a transmission, so you need an oil with a robust additive package. Pick an oil that is API SG/JASO MA, and you won't go far wrong. Beyond that, the synthetics are superior to plain old petroleum oil, and the ester syntetics are superior to the other two types of synthetics. http://www.p1-performance.com/pdf/oildoc.pdf

Your 440 is going to run hot, so you need an oil that will stand up to the heat. It is a good idea to run an oil that is on the thicker side, vs a thinner one...at least a 10W40 or even a 15W50 in summer.

My personal choice is Redline ester based synthetic (just ignore the fact that it is JASO MB....it is a long story, but it is safe for a wet chutch). Maxima, Motul, and Klotz also make excellent ester based oils. Honda HP4 or Yamalube are ok if you can't find anything else.
