So, it sounds like I should take the head off in any case. Does anyone know a good way to go about it who could point me in the right direction?

The head isn't bad to take off as long as you know the procedure to take and the specs. The best thing to do would be either pm HONDAMECHANIC and see if he can send you a service manual for the procedure or to go and buy one or see if the local dealership can print you some pages for the procedure.

Usually you can put oil on the tap to chase the thread and hopefully gather all of the shavings, but like I said it isn't really recommended. Check to see if you can find a heli coil to match the threads and put it. Welcome to the forums. Also never use a regular socket when removing a spark plug due to the fact that you can crack the ceramic on the plug.

It is indeed tough to find a good diesel mechanic.

If you have the chance, maybe you could also get certified in Cummins. If you could snag a job with them, I understand they are a really good outfit to work for.
