Default Honda Rancher 4x4 ES 10 hour service

I am supposed to bring my rancher in at 10 hours for the complete first service....they told me it would be about $250.....does that sound right or a little extreme of a cost?

Don't know about 10 hour service... I just had my 20 hour done (oil/filter and valve adj) was $115. Only reason I took it in was for the valve adj.

I've always had the first service done at the dealer. It solves any problems where warranty may be needed, plus the valves are properly adjusted, and all the cables should be adjusted back to factory spec at this time (as new cables always stretch) plus they should be checking over every nut and bolt to make sure eveythign is OK.

If you have a problem and didnt have the service done there, you have less of a leg to stand on then if you bring it in. After this, I do ALL my own service, maintenance and reparirs, if you plan to do this, pick up a good shop manual.

My dealer told me it would be 180 just for the valve adjustment so I bought a manual for 48 bucks and ill do it myself. I just got the manual in and am waiting to get an off day to do it. Doesnt look too hard at all.

10 hours is to early for the first valve adjustment. Owner's manual says 20 hours, and that is when the engine is totally broken in. This adjustment is very important however, so if you can't do it yourself, by all means pay someone who is experienced to do it!

Besides that, you can probably do the rest yourself:

Personally, I wouldn't have waited any 10 hours to do the first oil/filter change. I always do it at 1 hour to get any metal shavings or clutch debris out of there right away. Also, I like to switch to a break-in oil that has a monster additive package....Maxima Premium. After break-in, I swich to Redline ester synthetic.

Also, adjust the clutch at 20 hours.

Thanks everyone. I am going to bring it to them to make sure there is no warranty issues about where I brought it the first time.

Ten hours definitely seems too early. Like ReconRanger said, the manual and most dealers say the first service is due at 20 hours. My ES also flashed change oil @ 20 hours. Personally, I'd wait until you were much closer to 20.

Absolutely no sense in wasting money on a valve adjustment, until the engine is totally broken in. I would however do the oil change immediately.

I actually found out there is a certified honda repair place that is half the cost, and a lot less shady. Thanks for the replies.
