Me and my friend's 2001 Recons rear ends seem to skip sometimes when we ride in snow.Has anyone heard their rear end doing this?It sounds like it is missing a tooth on the Differential or something???Thanks

my honda fourtrax 2001 4x4 350, did that once. when I left it out in the cold the back end would hop up in down. put it in the heated garage (I usually do but I left it out this time) and withing hours it was working fine.

Our back ends aren't hopping up and down though. They are making clunking, skipping sounds from the differential.Sounds like the metal teeth on the gears missing each other.(costly sounding)

Take off the big bolt on top of the differential and see if oil should be added.
Also rotate the axle one full revolution and look at all the teeth to make sure none are cracked or broken. Thats about all I can tell ya

I had a recon that did that and it was the tranny not the differential

Both of them doing it is too much of a cooincidence. There is no differential in a Recon's rear end--it's just a solid axle with a ring and pinion. A pretty simple deal and tough to break I would think. And both of them? Nah. How about the clutch skipping in cold weather, before the engine oil has a chance to warm up? You guys in the frigid north would know--doesn't get real cold where I live.

The engines are warmed up when this happens though.

Funny you should mention this. I have mine tore apart right now trying to figure it out. Mine does the same thing. Its worse when Im on rough ground, but does fine on the road. It seems to be real bad in 3rd, 4th and 5th gear, not in 1st or 2nd. My dealer seems to think its the clutches. I should have it back together next week if my parts come in. If it helps I will let you know. Mine does it cold or hot, just when its on rough ground.
