Default Rancher help

Hi folks, my cousin has a 2005 Rancher and is having starter problems. When the key is turned on and he hits the starter button, nothing but a click. Once in a while it will start but most of the time nothing. He's thinking it's the starter but I was leaning more towards a bad battery. He rides it several times a week so it hasn't been setting up.
Any ideas and suggestions are appreciated.

Use a voltmeter , put the ( + ) positive on the starter post and put the ( - ) negative on a good ground (battery negative post) turn on the key and push the start button if the voltmeter reads 12v (or battery voltage) the starter peobably needs new brushes ..

Default Rancher help

I see I can get one on ebay for about $75.00 plus shipping, would it be cheaper to just buy a replacement or have his rebuilt?

Thanks for the help!

if you have 12 volts at the battery and your hearing the relay still click the next thing to check is power at the starter its the big wire that attaches to the starter with a 10 mm nut put the positive on that nut and the negative on the frame or engine from your volt meter if your getting 12 volts there its more than likely your starter motor

I would test it first , and myself i'd put brushes in it and clean the commutator bars but if you'd sooner get a new starter then that's the way to go ... We rebuild quite a few starters and it's not a hard job at all..
