2003 honda foreman 450s sprag clutch failed
#1
Hey to everyone, been a member for about a day and already got alot of help on my problem with my 450s foreman not holding back when I let off the gas. Now how hard is the SPRAG clutch to replace or what do I need to replace to fix my clutch problem and what is the cost for the new parts? I'm going to install the parts myself, I work on Harley's and have worked on these quads some but never been inside the clutch on these. I just rebuilt the top end of this engine last week so I guess I will tear the clutch apart now. Any help on this would be great, I have the service manual on this but it does not tell me anything about the sprag clutch. Thanks again for the warm welcome.

I would uess it would need just the sprag clutch, but you wouldn't know for sure until you see how things look.
If yours is similar to other models I've seen, a special puller is the best way to remove the clutch, and I'm sure it is one of those tools which is expensive, and you would probably never use again...
If you have a Honda shop nearby with a decent service department, I think I'd give them a call and see what they would charge.

Yes the sprag is what gives you the engine braking .. When you remove the sprag you will have to check the drive plate & the outer clutch , these are the pieces the sprag locks for engine braking and could be worn/damaged ..

Hey Thanks for all your help, I called the Honda shop today and they said the Sprag clutch was $93.00 dollars and the clutch shell was $150.00 I think. I'm going the check to see how much the clutch puller tool is and go from there. If the puller isnt to much I will buy it and do it myself. I work on H-Ds so if I have the right tools I will start wrenching on the Honda quads a little on the side. Again thanks for all your help.

I believe that my Foreman has the same problem. In your opinion, can I still ride it without causing additional damage. Other than the "winding down" noise, I hear somewhat of a knocking sound at or a little above idle that goes away when I rev it up. Could this noise be caused by the one-way bearing or is there something else that is typical of a Foreman. I know its hard to diagnose via email but any help would be greatly appreciated. I've been told that the best way to change the one-way is stand the bike up on its back rack. Can I get to the one-way without a special puller? Any additional advice.....Thanks in advance.
