I've never done it. Can they be driven off and on with a hammer and a pipe (or similar device) or do I need a press? Can anyone outline the entire procedure for me? I have a Clymer Service Manual but it is not very good. Thanks.

 

A puller of some sort is what the doctor ordered, but I didnt have one either.

I used a long tap, Go thru one side, and tap out the other sides bearing, its going to take a while, and keep tapping around the border, so it comes out even, and if you bust the bearing it could be alot harder to get out.

Once out, if you have a press, or a vice, find some round or square pieces of metal or wood, that would push the bearing in, about the same size, or a little smaller than the bearing,
again, make sure you go around it so it goes in even,dont forget to put plenty of grease around the sleeve (not inside of it) and around the edges of the bearing, you want it very nice and clean
when you push the bearings in, as you NEED friction to hold it in place.

you could also freeze new bearings before hand so it will be easier to put in, and/or heat up the carrier

 

Thanks. It sounds like it's do-able without a puller or a press (I have neither) but just a bit harder and longer process.

 

I did it. It wasn't hard at all. There was/is one small problem...I ended up with an extra o-ring. It's about 3" in diameter. It's not one of the ones that go on the bearing carrier (those have a flat ID, this is fully round but roughly the same diameter). I went over and over in my head where it came from and just can't come up with anything. I put one on the inside of the disk holder, against the face of the swingarm, and one on the ID of the disk holder. The only thing I can think of is that it belongs on the left side of the carrier between the carrier and the face of the swingarm. But if that's where it goes, it would get torn if you turn the carrier to adjust the chain. And again, if that's where it goes, then I think I'll be fine without it until I tear down some other time.

 

I used an air chisel, you have to be careful that it doesn't jump and damage the bore. I'd hit the trigger for a second, reposition and again. It took about 10 times to get it out.

No, it's not that one. In fact, the caliper mount takes 2 o rings. One against the bearing holder before you slide the caliper mount onto the bearing holder, and one in a groove on the ID. I put both of those in.

 

probably one of the ones that goes against the outside of the carrier seals

 

So is that one critical enough that I need to take the whole thing apart again?
