Default 06 Rancher Shift Issues

I've got this 06 Rancher 400 4x4 with the ESP.. If you throw it up into Drive with the lever it will engage but not come out of first gear.. Also spits and sputters in Reverse.. The dash is flashing ESP 12 times in the gear indicator box which to my understanding is a malfunction in the shifter motor.. I have cleaned and blowed out all of the electrical quick connects leading to the shift motor. I also jumped 12 volts to the shift motor with it detached from the atv and it spins freely.. Gear linked to the motor also turns freely by hand.. Also tried to reset the Computer but can't ever get the shift motor to make a noise in the process. I am aware that Honda has a bad reputation for the angle sensor going bad.. Could it still possibly be this sensor even though its not giving the code for it. Does anyone out there know the symptoms and what it could possibly be?? Thanks in Advance

I have had similar problems with my 03 rancher. Disconnect your negative ground cable from your battery. Leave it unconnected for at least a min or 2. This resets the computer. Honda told this to me, and it has worked for me many times. If that doesn't work, put the tranny into neutral using your tool Honda gives you. Do this with the Cable connected, once you have it in neutral disconnect the negative cable going to your battery. Again leave it off for awhile, then reconnect it. If neither of these work, Buddy you may be in trouble. Call Honda and ask them.

Good Luck

Ummm, 400 hondas are swash hydralic transmissions. No back up shifter like on the 350. Unhooking the battery to clear codes.... hmmmm asking for trouble on the 400. It needs to be reinitialized after the codes are taken care of

Hello Mine ended up to be the angle sensor.. It was weird and throwing a shift motor code. You got lucky yours actually is throwing the angle sensor code. These are notorius for failing. $90 dollar part. Remember you have to pre-load it. Heres the link for all the codes. Link
