Converting a 250 Recon to ??
#1
Ok, I've been throwing around the idea of swapping the engine/transmission on this 02 Recon I have. The ES is out and the transmission is stuck in gear. We are thinking shift forks.
I've got virtually nothing in this 4wheeler so I thought it might be fun to play with.
I've thought about converting it to something else. Here are a list of what I've thought about.
1.) Converting to a 250r engine with manual transmission. I know I'd have to swap some other parts, but dunno what all I'd be talking.
2.) Converting to a 300ex engine/transmission. Would modify the frame to mount a 400ex swingarm and rear axle/suspension. Could be a fun & fast trail 4wheeler but retain the utility body.
3.) Converting to a 300 engine/manual transmission from a Fourtrax.
4.) Converting what I have to a manual transmission. I have a good engine. Just a fubared transmission. And I do not want an electric shift.
What would be the pros/cons of doing any of this and what would it take to do it? I'm not real familiar with all the differences as far as what kind of modifications would have to be made. I'd like to keep costs down as much as possible so all parts would be used. I'm wondering also if it has been done before.
Any pointers, tips, opinions?

if you can find a used engine then your in good shape. i would say your looking at deffinatly moveing motor mounts no matter what. if you go with a 4trx300 utility engine then you can keep the rear end and current swing arm set up, with mabe some mods to your driveshaft to make it fit.
but if you go with a manual engine from a 250r or 300ex you will have to have a chain drive system. this will include a race swingarm and rear end, not to mention alot of cutting welding and fabing mounts for the swing arm and shock.
if your gona do all that you might as well put the money in finding a used recon engine or fixing the tranny problem. ididnt get to tell you on your other post, but if you rebuild ( or have somebody who knows there stuff) rebuild the tranny they can just put in a foot shifter. the es motor will just need to be removed.
