Default My old ATC200s refuses to idle

I have had this old '84 200s for a long time and it has never idled. I've learned to deal with it, but it is hard for other people to. I have had the carb apart many times..cleaned jets and every passage i could find. The jets are the correct stock size. I can adjust it to where it idles, but it will come down slow from RPM and eventually die out. I keep the idle set down so it doesn't do that. It is dangerous when you let off the throttle and it keeps going. It would be so nice if this thing idled! Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Luke

welcome to the forum! have you tried cleaning and adjusting your pilot jet? that would controle idol. usually adjusting it OUT will richen the idol mix and have it idol better.

if you let off the throttel and the rpm's dont go down it could be you have too weak of a carb spring? the spring wont close the slide fast enough. just a guess

I have cleaned and adjusted the pilot many times. When the idle is adjusted down, it will come down from the R's normally. But if you don't catch it, it will die. I found out brand new OEM carbs are only $160. Do you think that would solve the problem?

Have you checked compression or valve lash?

Have you tried lowering the jet needle ... The " E " clip should be on the 3rd. groove but I would try raising the clip to the top groove this will lower the jet needle ..

Compression and valve lash are good. I will try the jet needle. Where did you get those diagrams?

I had a problem like this ...it would run with the choke on like a possesed being going by itself ....and after cleaning it up...i realised the throttle cable was to tight ,and not allowing the machine to idle properly..the adjustment is on top of the carb.. juist one more thing to check
