Burning oil?
hello, i have a 03 honda rancher 2wd. i have kept up on the maintenance of the engine but now i seem to be burning oil. it only happens at high rpms, or if im decelerating from a high rpm, its only usually a puff never alot. it just recently started but the way i have had to get the rancher to the riding area is using a trailer too small for 2 atv's. my ranchers front tires sit on a prairies rear rack, total time up about 30 min. would this have anything to do with it?

You just described a classic valve guide seal problem.

It could, but I doubt it. If you get the thing to stand up on it's tail then yes it could depending on the angle of the jug.
I always caution people when they stand their wet sump quad on it's tail to be real careful when they start it. The oil "can" get past the rings and hydro the piston.
Sounds more like a guide seal problem to me.

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>you are thinking there is excessive wear in the cylinder? </end quote></div>
Yes; that is what he is thinking.
<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>is there a place to get those seals? i looked in dennis kirk didnt see any. </end quote></div>
The problem is rarey the seal alone. What happpens most of the time is the guide and valve stem wears. When this happens, it wallows the seal out and you start sucking oil.
Usually the guide, seal and valve are junk at this point and all need to be replaced.
