rancher es shifting probleMS

i have a 2007 rancher 420 es that is stuck in 1 st gear and wont shift up or down when i press the buttons. if i take the shift tool and manualy shift it it will shift up and down fine. when in nuetral the display flashes 4 times slowly the 2 times quickly. does anyone know what this code means? Or does anyone know what is wrong?

Code #42 is "shift switches up/down" ... I would first check the coupler for moisture & tightness..
