97 Honda TRX300 removed shock and rear end dropped

Okay, I compressed the single rear shock on my 1997 trx300 to remove it in process of painting everything. When I removed it, the rear end dropped to the floor. So it was easy to put the shock back in as I could raise and lower rear end without re-compressing the shock. Got shock it in. What I am not sure of is, from rubber boot with the two clamps where it's painted black is it supposed to be level? Mine is angled downward. Maybe it was that way before I removed the shock and just did not realize it. I did not want to put everything back together if I need to get access to that area to repair something. Any help out there? 1997 TRX300 shaft drive. Thanks.
