starter good or bad?
#1
sorry about all the new posts im making but here is the deal, i dont have a battery right now to test the starter so i took the battery charger and hooked the negative to the neg. side of the solenoid and i tapped the pos. to the pos. side of the solenoid, the starter made a kind of clicking noise but wold not turn over, so i took the starter off and the gear thing sticking out of the end turns very easy and it moves in and out of the starter about 1/2 an inch, so with it turning so easy is it still good? or could it be something inside of the starter bad? and is the gear supposed to be able to move in and out of the starter? i thought the only way a starter would be bad is if the gear DONT turn.? thanks in advance

Hey ghetto, just keep the Q's in your orinal thread the people that want to help know where to look. If your thread falls off the page bump it back to the top by replying to your own thread by typing bump. If you bump more than twice.....You know what they say.

A battery charger is not the same as a battery, it needs to see the load from the battery cells to put out a voltage/amperage, it isn't just a power supply. The only sure way to test your starter is with a battery, it can even be a car battery, 12 volts is 12 volts, the starter will only use the amps it needs, you won't damage anything with the bigger battery, unless the starter is shorted, then it will get hot real fast, and you will know what the problem was !!
