Default 05 Rubicon 2wd/4wd

While riding yesterday i shifted the bike from 2wd to 4wd drive. I noticed only the rear wheels were pulling out of the deep sand. After jacking the bike up and trying 4wd with the rear tires off it is confirmed the 4wd is not functioning. Switch seems fine as does the indicator light and fuse. Took the body off and followed the wires to a switch that seems ok.
I read the 2002 rubicon had some 4 wheel drive issues, but this is the first trouble i have had with the 2005. Does anyone have any experience with this type of problem?

So the 4x4 light isn't blinking? Anyway...

While you have the rear wheels off the ground, see what is turning and what isn't.

You might have ripped the splines off the front driveshaft or one of the axles.

Also check the connector for the front final drive clutch.

The 2002 did not have selectable 2wd/4wd, it was full time 4wd. The 2005 was the first year of of the part time system. Do as Jeff said, jack it up and see what moving. If the front moves when all are off the ground then you likely sheared something. If they don't move at all it's likely the engagement system.

thanks for the replies all. it seems you are right on regarding the splines in and around the front shaft. Not sure exactly where the problem is. have never taken one apart in that area so not certain how it disassembles. Any clues if the front gear case needs to come of to get the shaft? Or is it possible to remove the shaft from the final clutch? The 4wd light never did blink or give any indication there is a problem. After a short while of having it off the ground and testing around on 4wd system it started to make a whining noise. If any body has taken this apart and can offer any suggestions, please do .
