Default 86 TRX250 Fourtrax...Reverse anyone?

Hello all,

I'm new to the forum! I was given an 86 TRX250 fourtrax...believe it to be a utility, racks front and aft. This thing has been ridden hard, put up wet but...it runs! Does anyone out there in ATV land know if this thing has reverse? Can't seem to find the info anywhere...I've never owned a 4 wheeler before. On the left handlebar it has a broken (clutch?) lever that has one cable that appears to go to the right hand side of the tranny/crankcase and the other cable is missing. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Mine has reverse-- should be a red button on the left grip. You brake and push in the button to engage the reverse.

Thanks for the quick replies! Could one of you guys possibly send me a picture of this red button and lever you're talking about? All I have is what's left of a clutch handle frame (less handle). Also, do you guys know where I might find access to a owners manual? I have a repair manual but it doesn't show you the operation of the bike. Thanks again!

I found a pretty cheap new left brake lever w/red reverse button...that I think I can use in the existing lever bracket. The cable that is missing is the cable that apparently goes to the rear brake. Is it absolutely necessary to have the brake cable to use reverse as long as you are completely stopped?

The brake is what locks the reverse button. Not sure if you could use the foot brake for it (never tried) but I think you need to pull in the lever to puch the button then shift down below neutral.

Ok, I just tested it with a pair of channel locks, being careful not to mess up the cable end. All I have to do is pull out the cable a little and press the shifter down...goes right into reverse! Hot Dog! Thanks again for everything guys...this ought to be fun!
