Default 2005 Rancher HELP!

I bought a 2005 rancher from a friend that he had torn up. I rebuilt the lower end with new timing chain, gear, and etc. On a rancher of course that was one hell of a job. Then I got it put back together and once I got it started it smoked like a chimney and had no power i pulled the top end off and mic-ed the cyclinder I had it bored .40 over and put the new topend on. It runs great now...other than these problems.

Valves need adjusted bad constant ticking.

Feels like my 1st gear is short and it has plenty of power but not enough speed

Feel like im not getting all the power out of it I should be, I got passed by a 1997 suzuki 300 4x4 that has 4000 miles and smokes like a chimney.

My question is what should I do to unleash the power it should have after the rebuild? Re-jet it? Could the valves cause a big power loss?

BTW!:: I rolled it and smashed my face all up crawling out of a creek yesterday and spent a night in the hospital, i bent the handlebars with my face, the people at the hospital thought i was crazy when i walked in covered in mud with blood head to toe. But im okay. lol

The Honda has a super low 1st gear, its made to act like a replacement for a low rang sub tranny, really the 2nd gear is your starting gear for general riding.

being slower than a hard core Utility ATV like the older KQ 300 is just not right on a rancher unless you have big aftermarket mud tires.

Default hospital trip and now

Yes, Wednesday night we went creek riding and mudding. We do some pretty hardcore riding but I usually try to take it as easy as possible on my bike. We had been riding down a creek and had made it a few miles through mud/sand/several feet of water...and anyways me and my bestfriend always challenge eachother to go up steep hills, deep water, deep mud, etc...well there was a steep hill my two buddies had not made it up after 3 tries on a 650 honda 2008, and a 500 foreman, the two quads have identical tires to mine except I am obviously a 350 rancher so I decided it would be cool if i beat them up the hill so I attempted at making it up the hill upon first try I made it 4 feet farther up the hill than the other two bikes, upon the next several tries I made it to the same point and dug ruts, and on my last try ***** to the wall I was at the very top right past the ruts and it just started spinning so it started to slide down the hill trying to avoid a rut that would possibly overturn me I gave it a little gas which only made things worse because I was being lazy and sitting on my butt going up the hill my front end came off the ground and I caught the rut I had dug which began to flip the quad so I tried to jump to the side out of the way and I couldnt so I had to try and jump backwards out of the path of the quad unfortunate 7 feet up a hill with nothing but water rock and sand below I was screwed I landed directly in the path of the quad and the handlebars smashed face first into my face which I could feel a sudden slam as all the 600lb fourwheeler landed in my face but from the adrenaline I felt nothing my bestfriend by the time it landed on my oveturned the fourwheeler and the 2 of them watched me get up as they screamed I had to go to the emergency room as the blood poured down my face I realized I was in trouble. After punching the quad a few times and realizing I was screwed they hauled me as fast as the 650 would go to the house where they rushed me to the er and I received 20 double layer stitches a cat scan x-rays and treatment to my many other cuts and giant lumps on my head. I was released and yes the doctors and nurses thought I was insane when I walked into the er smiling with blood head to toe they attempted to get me in a wheel chair but I wouldnt and did most the cleanup stuff they would do by myself. Its now saturday and I just got back from an all night ride in the creek 10pm-5pm 7 hours of riding and 20 miles of swamps, creeks, ponds, etc. I had a hell of a time tonight but I wore protective bandages over my wounds and avoided limbs, and steep hills I was quite paranoid of. But anyways back to what I need help on what exhaust and jet kit do you people prefer? I have a .40 over bore. What should I do to get the most power out of this rancher?

Were you wearing a helmet? I'm sure you were, but if not its a good idea to start.

Choose what you want, but I know a guy who flipped a machine and had to have bone removed from his hip so they could rebuild his jaw solid enough to support false teeth... in his early 20's. Not cool.

Attempting to apply a little throttle while rolling backwards down a hill seems to be a way a lot of people get in trouble. The centrifugal clutch engages, and it flips. Once you start rolling backwards on a hill, keep your weight forward and steer it straight back down the hill, maybe easing on a little front brake.

Anyway, adjust the valves if they need done, but they would have to be way off for that to make any significant change to power. (I assume they were set properly when you reassembled the top end?)

I doubt the overbore will require a jetting change. Is the machine responding to throttle as it should in all RPM range? How does the spark plug look? Excessive popping coming off throttle?

Also, the Ranchers of this era are reliable solid quads, but were never intended to have thrilling power. I wouldn't go crazy on mods, as you are likely to loose the reliability, and I think you would be better off getting a different machine if you want a big gain in power.

Glad you weren't hurt worse.

Default no thanks

I don't need your riding advice over the internet, but nice try. I don't need mechanic advice either I'm simply asking what exhaust people find best for there rancher and what jet kit. I rebuilt the lower and top end by myself and I didn't adjust the valves yet because I just now got the shims.
