If your out in the field, a 1/2" slice is a 5-6 plug fix. Coat each one in rubber tire patch cement, let it sit for a 1/2 hour and air up. This will get you home. Once home, take the tire to an automotive tire shop and have the hole vulcanized. This is where they melt new rubber on the outside and inside of the hole to permanently repair the damage as good as new.

Ive ridden in places as tangly as it gets and would never bother breaking down a tire to install a tube.
