Proper way to check oil on 400EX?
My ex burns a little bit of oil, nothing major. So I need to check the oil more than ussual. But I was wondering what the right way to check it is. When its cold it reads almost half and when I warm it its higher. Shoul I check it cold/hot? When its hot do i wipe it on a rag and check again because when i do tht it reads none...

Doing this wrong can have consequences! By buddy checked his wife's cold and overfilled it. Just before she took off, I saw a big puddle of oil below the quad. Luckily I grabbed her before she got away. The pressure from all that extra oil with nowhere to go, blew the lines right off the tank!!! Had she gotten away from me, she would have destroyed the engine....
The oil in these dry sump engines goes and hides somewhere while they sit. If you check it cold, like you said, it will read low. Assuming you know there is at least a reasonable amount of oil in there, you must start it up for a few minutes (better yet, take it for a short ride!), then let it sit for 5 minutes before checking the oil level.
