I have a manual and know WHAT to do with the pilot jet to make it correct but actually doing it is another story. It's very hard to get to. What I did was use a screw bit from one of those bit changing screwdrivers but it was difficult. I had to reach way under the carb and be a contortionist. Anyone have a better idea?

 

There's no real "easy" way to do it. I did exactly what you did with a removable flathead tip and turned it with my fingers. You could try one of those angled screwdriver things but I didn't have much luck.
