Hi stangant,
may or may not work, but the problem could be that the fuel drain hose or outlet is open take a phillips or flathead and look for a screw close to the drain nipple on the bottom of your carb bowl and tighten it, in case its slightly open, causing your leak. good luck -justin

My guess is that you have a gummed up or defective float, needle valve, or seat.
This will cause the float bowl to overflow.
Depending on what machine you have, if it has a primer ****, deterioration of the seal there will also allow gas to flow into the float bowl.
