Default Braks shoes don't fit - what to do?

I ordered some brake shoes for my son's 200sx and when I installed them, they're too large and the drum won't go back on. I can't re-install the old shoes since one of them disintegrated. (Which explains why the brakes were stuck when we bought it... I expected to find the drum rusted, not full of little broken pieces of brake lining)

We want to go riding this weekend, so I don't have time to ship the shoes back.. I'm thinking about grinding the ends of the shoes where they pivot and where they contact the lever. Any major issues with doing that?

These are the 2nd set of shoes that I've had this issue with... the ones I ordered for our old Suzuki LT80 had the same issue... it turned out that the old ones still had some life in them, so those are still sitting in my barn.

Not sure about the 200sx, but are there adjusters to take up the drum slack, and are they backed off all the way?

I'd be hesitant to grind on anything. If they are the wrong parts, there's no telling how it would perform (or not perform).

One thing to is in some of the honda drums they have a ring on the very outer part of the drum. they get rust built up underneath them you can remove them and clean them up with a wire wheel and reinstall they usally will drop down in the groove properly them so its not hanging up when putting the drum over the pads.

Thanks guys.

I'll pull the damping ring and see if that helps. I was nervous about breaking that, but unlike lots of parts for this beast, it looks like they're still available and not terribly expensive if I break it.
