Rancher 400 AT Snorkel HELP!
#1
ok guys I've got some question and need some answers, hopefully someone can help.So I have a 2004 Honda Rancher 400 AT I've been looking at snorkel kits for a while and decided they were to exspensive so I would build my own. I have read sevralthings saying that if you install a snorkel kit that you have to install a jet kit aswell for it to run correctly (not too lean). So I got my jet kit yesterday, it came with a 138, 140, and a 142 jet, I then took the carb off to install it and low and behold my main jet is already a 142! and the damn kit from HMF doesnt come with a needle either. My main qeustion is do I really need this jet kit? the snorkel I made just replace the stock intake tube, I still have the stock airbox and filters, the bike still runs fine but I'm just worried about running it to lean. I know I can adjust idle to 1/4 throttle with the pilot jet that is adjustable but I'm not sure about the other stuff since I already have a 142 jet in it.... Thanks for any help you can give!

I have a 04 400AT also and did not rejet it when I put the snoekel on it. I have actually notice more power since I snorkeled it. I have had it snorkeled for 2 years now with no ill effects. So don't worriy about rejetting it.

there is no hard and fast rule here, especially when you are dealing with custom snorkels made to individual specifications as opposed to kits.
Homemade (and even kit) snorkels will potentially flow less air than stock breather tubes because of the greater restrictions on air flow caused by the bends and turns as well as the longer length of the snorkel...so with less air you should rejet with a smaller main so that you aren't running too rich. I'm betting papahouse's honda was running a bit lean to begin with, which would explain the "more power after the snorkel install" claim.

One from each brake backplate, one from each diff, one from the cooling fan motor, not sure about carb, at least one. Hang onto that bike, it is a much better auto than the 420s which replaced it.
