and if the manual said to run golden fairy dust, you would be running through the woods looking under toadstools? Not everything in the manual is necessarily correct, of course they would recommend 91 octane, they want you to run top grade fuel to keep fuel related problems at a minimum, that does not mean the engine requires it.

87-89 regular fuel if perfectly fine for a stock 400ex-
manual also says to use only honda oil- at around $10 qt- I don't think so....

Wow didnt think this was going to be a pissing contest. Well since you know best then run 87. I was just stating Honda says to run 91+. Since the OP was a novice wouldnt using a higher octane give him less fuel related problems as you stated?
As for Beergut Honda manual says not to use an energy conserving oil or an oil with additives not to run only Hondalube

yes fill through dipstick hole.
Best thing to do is go to walmart and get a gear oil pump. Its about 12 bux in the oil section. Its used to pump gear oil in stern drives for boats.it looks like a soap dispenser pump. It fits on the quart oil bottles...no mess
I might be proven wrong but I use about 2 quarts when changing the oil and filter. I pump 1 and a half in then fill to second line on dipstick. I start it up let it warm up then shut it off wait a few min then check again.
