I want to know if changing my stock 32mm carb on my 300EX, up to a 38mm will make a noticable difference in power? Is it worth the extra $$$...?
Will it improve throttle response?
Will it totally kill my gas milage?
Will it make the machine any less reliable?
All comments welcome, and thanks for all the advice in advance.

i got a 300ex stock me too

and i think if you pump up the carb
you need a bigger piston and a cam for it
i think 38mm is to big for 288cc..
im not an expert but im curious of what the other will say

Bigger carbs don't necissarily mean better performance.

Especially on the 300EX. Actually, the stock carb is WAY large enough for even a built engine. In fact, I run a stock 250X carb (same as the 300EX) on my 350X!

Carbs just deliver fuel and air. Adding a bigger carb doesn't mean the engine is gonna drink more fuel. The stock carb is capable of delivering all the fuel your engine can demand.

Basically, installing a larger carb will give you these characteristics:
Finicky throttle response on low end.
okay midrange (same as stock).
slightly more top end.

Normally, you'd see a tiny increase in horsepower on a dyno -- like 1%, but if you did track testing, you would have quicker lap times on the engine with the stock carb.

Why do lots of people swear by bigger carbs? I think it's because the engine "feels" faster with a bigger carb. You've gotta have alot more clutch and throttle control to get the engine to run right, and it's "peaky" feeling -- surges and hits harder. So people feel like they're going faster.

Hope this helps!

Pam
