2002 TRX350 Rancher ES 4x4 shifting problems
#1
I've been reading all the posts about the ES shifting problems. It seems likely that my problem is the shifter plate or the tabs on the shifter arm but, I am no mechanic and a girl on top of that. Unfortunately, I'm financially strapped and can't afford a shop bill or buying parts I don't need so, I'm hoping some of you all can tell me what my problem is if I describe the symptoms.
I bought the machine 3 years ago, I think. This will be the 4th summer coming up. I didn't have it too long before it started doing this. I learned pretty quickly not to shut it off in gear or let it die in gear. The first 2 summers, it was only an occasional problem but, last summer it got exceedingly worse until, now, it happens almost every time I try to ride it.
It almost always quits shifting in 1st or 2nd gear. I might be riding or I might be stopped trying to shift to neutral to shut it off. In the countless times it 's happened, only 1 time was it in reverse.
The manual shifting tool wasn't with the machine when I bought it-neither was a manual. I found the manual on line and read about the shifting tool. Figured I'd order one when I ordered the part to fix it. At first, I'd get it to shift by rocking it back and forth. If that didn't work, it seemed like I could usually get it after putting the battery charger on it for awhile. Sometimes when I'd be trying to get it to shift, it would shift on up to 5th but, still wouldn't come back down. The weird thing is - when it's stuck in 1st or 2nd, it will only roll backwards freely. If I try to roll it forwards, it is really hard and I can feel a "hitch" about every 1/4 turn of the wheels. It seems like it's harder to get it to shift if it quits on an incline but, of course, it's harder for me to rock it on an incline. If it's in 5th gear when it finally shifts, it will usually go on down pretty easily. If it's in 2nd when it finally shifts, it still might take a little effort to get to 1st and neutral.
Like I said, the first 2 summers it was only an occasional problem. When it got alot worse last summer, I dug around in my tools until I came up with something to use as the manual shifter. The manual shifter worked fine for maybe a dozen times and now it won't shift with it anymore - although, it did work the time before last. But, the problem is alot worse - it happens almost every time I try to ride. I haven't made it out of the yard and wouldn't trust it if I could.
The only thing I've done is I tried to tighten up the cable that runs into the back side of the left handlebar. Brake cable? It's been loose since I got it. It won't stay tight, though. It only goes all the way back in if I push it in. I thought it helped when I first tightened it but, maybe just a coincidence.
If I don't stop, you all won't want to read a post this long! Sorry! Hope someone will be kind enough to help me out. Thank you very much!
One more thing - this one is the early model and it doesn't have the blinking troubleshooting lights.
