Basic info on the 1987 250es Big Red please

We have basically no experience with the 3 wheelers and had actually been looking for newer ATVs when my son (20 yr) ended up bringing this one home today.
My questions are basically, how difficult is it going to be to get replacement parts when/if we need them since it hasn't been manufactured for so long, and also about the ban on manufacturing them, are they that dangerous? We only want these for leisure riding. I should also add that it runs really well and doesn't need any work that that I'm aware of but thinking in long terms about the parts.
I would appreciate any advice very much!

You sir have one of the rarest Honda atc's ever built. The 87 Big Red was thought not to exist but slowly they are coming up for sale and popping up on craigslist etc...
The general consensus concerning the safety of 3 wheelers was blown way out of proportion back in the mid 80's. The consent decree (ban on 3wheeler production) came about because of the many accidents that were said to be caused by 3wheelers. If you look at the records the majority of accidents were caused by carelessness, stupidity, and complete disregard of safety on the RIDER'S part, not the machine. It's like any other vehicle, atv, dirtbike, jetski, scooter, etc, etc, etc...even a bicycle! You have to learn and get a feel for it, wear the proper safety gear, and swing your leg over it with a tremendous amount of respect for the machine and not be a know-it-all your first time on the trails.
So as far as I'm concerned as long as you are familiar with the machine and have taken sufficient time to get comfortable on it, 3wheelers are no more dangerous than any other type of recreational "toy" ever produced. Always wear a helmet, don't operate under the influence of alcohol (or drugs for that matter), ride safe and within your limits, and have fun!
btw: there are many more experienced people on this site than I on this topic and hopefully they will add to this and correct me if needed.
