Default 05 Honda TRX500 automatic shifter question

I just got one of these quads and trying to take it apart to fix several little things that are wrong with it. I am trying to remove the car like gear selector to get the tank plastic off to remove the gas tank, how does the shifter handle with the push button come off? It seems like a nice quad so far but I haven't even gotten to ride it yet. It sat for about 2 years and I want to go through the thing real good before I start it and ride it around. Anything I should look at before I try it out? Are they reliable machines?

Thanks for the help,
Crazyotto

Remove the 2 screws in tee handle [phillip head] this will help remove tee handle..I normanally remove the 2 6mm bolts[10mm head] out of the whole shifting bracket an just lay aside the assembly [dont have too remove linkage]. then after you remove the tank mounting bolts then tank should pivot right out okay..
