I've got a question about a Honda 300 4x4 suspension. I have a '99 that I'm looking into suspension mods for all-around use. It's bone stock, and so far it has exceeded all my expectations. The only thing I want out of it is a little higher top speed, and better suspension to handle it.

Since I can't really change the gearing (or add a 6th gear), I plan on installing 1" larger tires to gain a little on top (and a stiffer sidewall to handle faster turns). If it is really necessary, I may look into a 313cc kit to regain any lost power. I'm in the process of trying to cut weight, but haven't found anything yet to drastically do so.

Without having done any research, I'm guessing all that's available are Progressive and Works OEM replacement shocks that may or may not gain me about an inch of travel. What I'm wondering is if I can install some used 250R shocks all the way around to get the travel I'm looking for.

I assume the limit to the suspension travel will be the maximum allowable angles of the front CV joints and the rear CV/U-Joint (I'm not real sure what's under that boot). Is this true? I'm also under the assumption that I should be able to gain 1"-2" without problems, since longer shocks are available and highlifter's lift kit extends the lower shock mount.

I also understand we're talking about a 500+ pound machine that obviously carries more weight on it's nose than a 250R, but I should be able to find some used 250R/400EX/300EX fronts for a hundred bucks or so, and about the same for a decent rear. If it works, I may consider upgrading to some new dual-rates that are valved specifically for the load, in the future.

So what do you think? Will I be able to stuff in longer shocks without too much fabrication or stress on the driveline? Would I be better off with less travel and weight-specific valving in a new aftermarket shock? Thanks everyone.

If your going to put R shocks on the front of your 300 they will have to be on the lowest pre-load and you are going to have to grind out a lower preload to get them to fit and when you put them on you probly will have a hard time because they are stiff and your cv joints will be as verticle as possible even when it is on the ground you will probly have to repair the joints after a while. I would go with works or progressive suspension!
