Has anyone every used the wrong oil and had your clutch slip?

A clutch will slip more in the upper gears(4th, 5th, 6th, etc.) because that is where peak power comes in at and that is where the clutch grabs most.... Look at the Centerforce clutches, they grab harder the more RPM's they are subjected to...
Right before I replaced the clutch in my car, I could hardly tell in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd that it was slipping until I got to 4th and fifth and then I had to feather the throttle.

I had a similar experience. When I bought my EX new, I used Honda 10w40 I think it is GP, it is in a black bottle. It worked fine. Then, I tried the Honda synthetic blend, 20w40 or 20w50, I can't remember, my clutch slipped with that. I switched back to regular Honda non synthetic oil and it works fine.

I would try just changing the oil before I changed the clutch disks. As to using special oil from Honda I don't and I don't think it is needed. I have used Valvoline oil in all my 4 stroke motorcycles and quads (mostly Hondas), standard and auto since 1968 and NEVER had a clutch go bad! I wish you luck!

I recommended replacing the friction bearing discs, but if he was in a bind for cash, he could scuff the discs. If he doesn't have the cash for the clutch, he certainly doesn't have the perfectly flat glass surface to properly "lap" the friggen things. It is a fact that automotive engine oils have addatives (friction modifiers) that tend to collect on the clutch plates. No manufacturer will recommend them. Friction modifiers work to increase the lubricating properties of oil. In a clutch type limited slip rear end, the special additive or the specific gear lube recommended is to make the posi quieter in operation, not to help make it grab. They don't need help in that area because they use between 400 and 800 pounds of preload on the clutch packs. I also mentioned that you will probably be OK if it was just an occasional mistake. Looking at most of the machines here, I would find it hard to imagine anybody absolutely smoking a clutch, except the banshee. I am not making stuff up, but posting information from my experience and fact backed up by manufacturers and engine builders.
One last thing, you tell me that if you drag race, and your clutch is slipping, that it will grab at the start, when your clutch it trying to move a couple hundred pounds+ from a dead start, but will slip in 4th or 5th gear? That is some very FALSE information.
Glad that it was an easy fix.

I have never had a problem with any oil, but a friend put a bottle of limited slip differntal fricton mod in his XR200R and he had 6 neturals! I drained and filled it with a 50/50 mix of kerosone and 30W, rode it easy in first and drained it, re-filled with 30W and rode a easy few miles then changed it over to Honda GN-4 with no problems since.

His could be very well slipping in high gear. When my clutch slipped it was in 3,4,5 gear. Never seemed to slip in 1,2, because the tires would spin. In higher gears, it would chatter, especially if the quad was going a little slow, and I would gas it hard going throug snow. Instead of spinning the tires like normal, the clutch would chatter.
