More trx250 Q's
#1
I have been reading down thru the forum and have heard about either the first, second or third gear going bad in the X. Does this only happen in the '87? The X I'm buying is a '87 also, should I be concerned about this problem? What are some symtoms of the gears going bad? What are some other things I should watch for in the Trx250x when buying? thanks for the help!!!

You should be too worried about buying an '87.. I have had 2 of them and know a few others who had soem with about a total of 5-6 in our group over the years.
Knock on wood, we have never had a problem with the gears. As long as the machine was taken care of then you should be fine. Just make sure you keep clean oil in it(change it about once every 4-5 rides or if you race, change it either after every one or two races)...
Also, use good oil, dont skimp.... The machine only takes abotu 1.69 quarts so spend an extra couple bucks and get a good oil and filter...
Also, make sure your air filter is clean(doesn't pertain to the gears, but it doesn't hurt)..
One last thing t watch for is your front sprocket. Make sure you keep a good one on their and dont let it get too much play on the counter shaft. I have seen two people let theres go and they had to have that shaft replaced. The shaft itself is $200...
