400ex- Improved air-flow
#1
Hey fella's
I met a dude today who also owns a 400ex. He showed me a modification that I'm kinda questioning... He removed the white/clear tube that runs into the air box. The other end simply butts up against the gas tank or something near by. (not really sure)- regardless... he removed this plastic tube and put panty-hose in-place of it- and secured it with a clamp ring. He says he gets Much better air flow.
My question is... what does this white/clear plastic tube do? It must have some type of purpose... What do you guys think? anyone else do this mod?

I did it to mine. There are a few issues, 1. riding through wet things is more difficult. 2. it weakens the support of the actual airbox and they break easier if you jump big (luckily they are only $12) 3. it does help flow. 4. It is almost easier to cut a hole in the airbox lid.
I really like mine this way though and its not like you couldn't put it back on.

I just got the Sparks air flow mod which allows you to cut roughly a 4x6 inch hole in the lid and then velcro a protective screen to it to protect you in the muddy stuff.
I thought about cutting my air flow tube back away from the carb so I could access my carb better, and maybe help force air in better. This way I could keep my air box reinforced, and also keep my filter from getting knocked off. I also thought about maybe sliding a pre filter over the front of my air tube.
