Default 83 honda 185s troubles

"Ol Bessie" just refuses to fire up and run. Tried adjusting the timing on both the "F" and the "T" settings and it still wont run. I took the carb apart and it looked good and clean. Never worked on one of these before so idk what their usual issues are.

The spark plug is firing but it did look like it may have had some oil on it. Any idea how to stop that or if that is even the issue?

Someone mentioned two screws on the carb that adjust the air and fuel ratio. Anyone tell me which one does which and the best way to go about adjusting those?

Thanks a bunch!

Best advice with air fuel ratio is leave it alone. The quad has been working with that set up since 1983 so why should it need a different air fuel ratio now? Most engines need (and get) a different air/fuel ratio for starting anyway, that's what the choke is for. Clean the carb out, blow all jets out with an air line. Set valve timing to the T mark and check valve clearances, fit a new plug. If it oils the plug up you are going to need new piston rings or even a re-bore. Do a compression test if you can.

Not sure about the 185, but the 200 needs the air gap on the signal generator for the ignition to be right. If it still won't run after setting everything up, take it to an expert.

may also just be flooding itself do to needing a carb rebuild or replacement, i've used the aftermarket (Chinese) carb assy's with great results on these engines, both the 185's and the 200's with no modds needed to the carbs..............

well i broke the pull start so that will be a fun fix.

anyway, since the pull start broke i took the case off and was using a drill to try and start it. got nothing. i did notice if i cover the air intake for a few seconds while cranking it then release it just pukes gas out of it. does this help anyone narrow down the issue?

that was my guess. wasn't sure if it was just because the drill was cranking way faster than a pull start would?
