Default 2005 Honda Rancher 420 ES Shifting to Reverse Issue

My ATV has been having issues shifting down into reverse (using the buttons) from neutral for the past few months. I would say it works 1 out of 8 times. Meanwhile it does not have any issues shifting from gear into neutral prior to me turning off the machine. I'm completely perplexed. I should point out that I am not overly mechanically inclined but would much prefer to try (learn) and fix things myself rather than bring it in. I did search on the forum for a similar issue and there was nothing I could find that was directly related to my issue. It is an electronic shift, which I normally use so I don't typically have to manually click through the gears. I was hoping someone much smarter than I could offer some advice.

Thank you in advance for your time, it is much appreciated.

As papa hog scoot writes, the cable does need to be adjusted correctly, but ES models also have a switch operated by the lever at the other end of that cable, in the back of the gearbox. It earths out when the lever is moved far enough, but I have had quite a few ES models where the switch is faulty, or the wire to it not connected properly. So if adjustment doesn't fix it, check that out

Does anyone know if you un hook the shift motor from the front case and it's still plugged into the power plug turn the key on and hit the gear button on the handlebar will the gear move on the shift motor?

Yes, once, after a few seconds the ECU realizes that no gearchange has happened and goes into fault mode, putting a code up on the dash and refusing to work again until you switch ignition off and back on again. This doesn't prove anything though. If the motor is seized you can check by turning the motor by hand, if brushes are worn down, it may work when out, but not with the load of the shift mechanism on it.
