Default Flashing shift display

I have a 2001 Honda foreman 500 rubicon and the d1,d2, esp are flashing and it won’t shift out of first gear. It spits and sputters in reverse just replaced the voltage regulator and had it reset. Now it’s doing it again. How do I reset it or find out why it keeps flashing

It has gone into limp mode. Why did you fit a new regulator and get it "reset"? The flashing D is usually in Morse code to tell you what is wrong with your automatic gearbox electronics, sort out what is wrong, then the fault code goes away as a rule and it will no longer be in limp mode. Slight caveat, early ES models (pre 2002) didn't have fault codes not sure about early Rubicons.

The voltage regulator was replaced because it was draining the battery. The guy at the shop said that the display was flashing and they had to reset it. I’m trying to not have to take it back there if possible

I would read the codes[blinks] to see what it tell you 1 long blink is 10 and short blinks is 1.It could be several different things, gear change switch, brake switch, ECU,speed sensor,. angle sensor.etc so getting the codes would save alot of parts not needed

To get the codes hold both the shift buttons and then turn on the key and count?

No just turn the key and the display should start reading out the codes

It may only start displaying codes once you try to use the bike, but once they are "up" you can read them. Seems a bit odd it didn't do it until they changed the regulator, wonder if the new one overcharges, that would throw up a fault code.

Went out last night to read codes and everything was fine. No flashing. Didn’t run it to see if it actually worked that will be tonight.
